Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17, KJV
God did not create us to grow alone. This verse uses the image of iron sharpening iron – a process that requires friction and contact. In the same way, God uses relationships to shape our character, deepen our thinking, and strengthen our faith.
True friendship is more than pleasant conversation and shared interests. It includes honest discussions, accountability, and encouragement. Sometimes a friend may say something that challenges or corrects us. It may feel uncomfortable, but like sharpening, it makes us sharper and stronger.
We need to surround ourselves with people who draw us closer to God, not away from him. Wise friends help us choose what is right when emotions or pressure try to take over. They remind us of truth when we feel discouraged or confused.
At times, we ourselves are the influence in someone else’s life. The question is not only who is sharpening us, but also who we are sharpening. Are we contributing to the growth of others? Do we speak life, truth, and love into their lives?
Healthy relationships require humility. We must be willing to learn, to listen, and sometimes to change. But the result is worth it: people growing stronger together in wisdom and faith.
God uses people as tools in the process of shaping us. When we accept this, we start seeing even challenging relationships as opportunities for growth.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the people you have placed in my life. Help me to be teachable and also to be a source of encouragement and truth to others. Use my relationships to draw me closer to you. Amen.
